Robert Leon Demachy (1859-1936). Robert Demachy was a French amateur photographer and painter who became one of the masters of the gum bichromate process. He was a leading member of the Pictorialist movement around 1900. His work was widely exhibited and published by Stieglitz in 'Camera Work'. Demachy's elegant gum pictures were often heavily retouched, using pastels, for example, to create highlights. The subject matter and treatment in Demachy's photographs owe much to the wok of Degas and his contemporaries, resulting in photographs that were closer in effect to painting.
