Gum-coated gelatin bromide print of soldiers departing for war. The image is executed in traditional Pictorialist style using a hand-crafted process to underline its artistic and poignant qualities. The figures are captured in a frieze-like configuration under a darkened archway which almost spans the picture-plane. A light from the top left corner casting across the soldiers in the foreground adds dynamism to the flattened composition and represents a patriotic social commentary from the photographer. Francis Mortimer (1874-1944).
