Description

A photograph of 'The Monster Robot' being exhibited by Mullard at the Radio Exhibition Olympia, taken by George Woodbine for the Daily Herald newspaper on 17 August, 1932. Mullard Ltd were a leading British manufacturer of radios and valves. The term 'robot' comes from the Czech word 'robota', meaning 'compulsory labor. The word was first used in the 1921 play, RUR - Rossum's Universal Robots, by the Czech novelist and playwright Karel Capek (1890-1938). This photograph has been selected from the Daily Herald Archive, a collection of over three million photographs. The archive holds work of international, national and local importance by both staff and agency photographers.
