A photographic portrait of Sir Nripendra Narayan Bhup Bahadur, the Maharajah of Kuch Behar (1862-1911), India, taken by W & D Downey. This photograph was taken during a visit to England made in 1887 by the Maharajah and Maharani. During this visit they were presented to Queen Victoria, who became close to the couple. The Maharajah is photographed here in the ornate clothing and headdres suitable for his position. He is wears a medal and a brooch that both appear to bear Queen Victoria's image. This photograph appears in 'The Cabinet Portrait Gallery' series of celebrity portraits and biographies published in the 1890s. The series includes royalty, actors, academics and authors.
