A photographic portrait of Sir James Matthew Barrie (1860-1937), taken by W & D Downey. Barrie was a Scottish dramatist and novelist. In 1883, he began his writing career at the Nottingham Journal, soon emerging as a novelist and playwright. His most famous work is 'Peter Pan' (1904), a character based on the children in Barrie's life - and on himself. This photograph appears in 'The Cabinet Portrait Gallery' series of celebrity portraits and biographies published in the 1890s. The series includes royalty, actors, academics and authors.
