Sir Nigel Gresley, designer of the London & North Eastern Railway A4 class 4-6-2 locomotive number, stands next to the engine which bears his name. This streamlined locomotive, numbered 4498, was built at Doncaster works. It was used to haul passenger trains between London and Scotland. Another of Gresley's A4 locomotives, number 4468 Mallard, holds the record for the fastest speed by a steam locomotive, of 126 miles per hour.
