Illustration from 'Japan: travels and researches undertaken at the cost of the Prusian government' by Johannes Justus Rein, (London, 1888). The area of Nikko is a national park in the centre of Honshu, the main island of Japan. Rein (1835-1918) travelled throughout Japan for nearly two years between 1874 and 1875. His published observations remain a rich source of information for all aspects of Japan and its people at this time.
