Illustration of Aino or Ainu people, aborigines of Japan, from 'Japan: travels and researches undertaken at the cost of the Prussian government' by Johannes Justus Rein, (London, 1888). Rein (1835-1918) travelled throughout Japan for nearly two years between 1874 and 1875. His published observations remain a rich source of information for all aspects of Japan and its people at this time.
