Engraving in the Japanese style, showing a traditional boar hunt, from 'Vijf jaren in Japan, (1857-1863)' by J L C Pompe van Meerdervoort (1829-1908), a Dutch medical doctor who spent five years in Japan. His account of his visit, (in English: 'Five years in Japan'), was published in Leiden, 1867-1868. He describes in great detail political and social changes in Eastern Asia and Japan, shortly before Japan opened its borders to the West. The book is famous for its tinted lithographs of Japanese people of different social clases in their traditional costumes.
