Engraved frontispiece showing women telephone operators in a large telephone exchange. The cutaway shows the bundled wired passing out underground. Illustration from 'Electricity in the service of man: a popular and practical treatise on the applications of electricity in modern life' translated from the German of Dr Alfred Ritter von Urbanitzky (b 1852) and edited by Richard Wormell (1838-1914), published in London in 1886.
