Lithograph by Champin of Apinage people in the state of Maranhao. The men, on the left, carry guns, wear headdresses and have painted their bodies. From 'Expedition dans les parties centrales de l'Amerique du Sud' ('Expedition in the central parts of South America'), by Francis de Castelnau (1812-1880), published in Paris in 1852. This is an account of the French government's scientific expedition led by Castelnau in the years 1843-1847. The party travelled across South America to La Paz in Bolivia, making meteorological, botanical and zoological observations.
