Description

Engraved plate eight by Coutant after Prevost, from 'Voyage autour du monde', ('Voyage round the world') by Louis Isidore Duperrey (1826). The Papuan pig is illustrated with its skull; the island of New Guinea is now divided between Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. Duperrey (1786-1865), a French marine hydrographer, was the commander of the 'Coquille' during its world voyage (1822-1825) which included Chile, Peru, Polynesia, the Molucca Islands (Indonesia), New Ireland (Papua New Guinea) and Australia.
