Title page to 'A treatise of such mathematical instruments, as are usually put into a portable case' by John Robertson (1712-1776), published in 1747. Robertson was at one time master of the Royal Mathematical School at Christ's Hospital, and later headmaster of the Royal Naval Academy, Portsmouth. He then became Clerk, and later Librarian, of the Royal Society. In 1775, he produced the first slide rule with a runner attached.
