Lithograph by Breton after Baron. The ventral fins of the lumpsucker or lumpfish are modified to form a suction disc with which it clings to objects with great force. Illustration from 'Voyage en Islande et au Groenland publie par ordre du Roi sous la direction de M Paul Gaimard' by Eugene Robert (1806-1879), published in Paris in 1851. The book, in English 'Voyage to Iceland and Greenland published by order of the King under the direction of Mr Paul Gaimard', is an account of a scientific expedition.
