Description

Engraving by B Roger after Petit, of a king wearing an elaborate headdres and striped robe. Illustration from part of 'Voyage de decouvertes aux terres Australes, execute par ordre de S M l'empereur et roi', compiled by naturalist Francois Peron (1775-1810) and published in Paris in 1815. The book, in English 'Voyage of discovery to the Southern lands undertaken by order of his majesty the emperor and king', is an account of the French cartographic survey expedition to Australia, 1800-1804, led by Thomas Nicolas Baudin (1754-1803), on which Peron served as one of the scientific team.
