Engraving by William Radclyffe from a drawing by David Cox (1783-1859). This bustling image shows women shopping for livestock, including geese and rabbits, in a crowded open air market with a view of Birmingham in the background. Within a few decades of this drawing being made, Birmingham had grown into an industrial city with a vast and expanding population. Cox was an English landscape painter born near Birmingham, and Radclyffe went on to found the Birmingham School of Art. Published on 3rd December 1827. Dimensions: 285 mm x 357 mm.
