A photograph of a group of volunteer nurses stood outside a hospital in Halifax, West Yorkshire, taken by Herbert Galloway Stewart in about 1915. This photograph is taken from a series of annotated albums featuring members of the Russian Royal Family, taken mainly in St Petersburg and the Crimea between 1908 to 1918. The albums were compiled by Herbert Galloway Stewart, who was employed by the Grand Duchess Xenia (1875-1960) as a tutor for her son, Prince Andrew Alexandrovitch Romanoff (1897-1981). The albums form a part of the Ricketts Collection, a collection of prints, albums, ephemera and objects assembled by Howard and Jane Ricketts. The Collection concentrates mainly on 19th century British photography, but is also rich in documentary, topographic and ethnographic photography from around the world.
