Description

Record breakers Mal Whitfield and Arthur Wint at the finish of the 800 metres final, with the Frenchman Marcel Hansenne, on left, who finished third and equalled record. In the 800 metres event Mal Whitfield (USA) recorded a new Olympic record. He won the Olympic gold for the event twice. Born in Texas he joined the United States Army Air Force in 1943 and served in both World War II and the Korean War. Whitfield was the first black athlete to win the James E Sullivan Award for outstanding American amateur athlete. Whitfield later worked for the US State Department, conducting sports clinics in Africa for over 47 years.Olympic Photo Association
