Lithograph by Adam after de Sainson; a Tongan is shown grovelling subserviently towards the French naval officers of the 'Astrolabe'. The fruit on the right could posibly have been brought by him as a gift. The Astrolabe was under the command of French navigator Jules-Sebastien-Cesar Dumont d'Urville (1790-1842), during a scientific expedition to the Pacific.
