Description

Lithograph by Adam after de Sainson; a Tongan is shown grovelling subserviently towards the French naval officers of the 'Astrolabe'. The fruit on the right could posibly have been brought by him as a gift. The Astrolabe was under the command of French navigator Jules-Sebastien-Cesar Dumont d'Urville (1790-1842), during a scientific expedition to the Pacific. Illustration from Dumont d'Urville's account of the journey, 'Voyage de decouvertes de 'l'Astrolabe': execute par ordre du roi, pendant les annees 1826-1827-1828-1829', published in Paris in 1833.
