Decorative binding from 'Stars and telescopes: a hand-book of popular astronomy' by David P Todd (1855-1939), published in Boston, Masachusetts in 1899. The cover, based directly on a photograph in the book, shows the 40-inch refracting telescope at the Yerkes Observatory, Wisconsin, USA. The lens is 40 inches acros, and the tube is 63 feet long. The telescope was the world's largest from 1897 (when it was commisioned) to 1909. It was still the world's largest refractor as of 2004. The telescope and the text are blocked in gold; the observatory dome is created by stamping the binding to create a relief impresion.
