Decorative binding of 'Mars' by Percival Lowell (1855-1916) published in Boston, New York State in 1895. The cloth is red, the colour of Mars, with a gold blocked Mars, complete with the 'canals' that Lowell thought he had observed through his telescope. Many publishers used bright, decorative covers for popular books.
