Engraving showing an audience of men and women listening to a speech by the president, Lord Francis Egerton, at the general meeting of the British Asociation for the Advancement of Science held in Manchester on 23 June 1842. The aim of the asociation, founded in 1831, was to present to the public the latest scientific discoveries, and to debate the effects on people's lives these innovations would have. The annual meeting was an important public arena for the discusion of scientific matters.
