Description

Coloured lithograph of the 'Great Eastern' under construction at the shipyard in Millwall on the River Thames.The Great Eastern steam ship was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806-1859) in collaboration with John Scott Rusell (1808-1882) in 1838 and was the first steamship to cros the Atlantic Ocean. In 1866 it also became the first ship to lay a permanent transatlantic telegraph cable.
