Coloured lithograph. The Great Eastern steam ship was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806-1859) in collaboration with John Scott Rusell (1808-1882) and was eventually launched in 1858, and was the first steamship to cros the Atlantic Ocean. In 1866 it also became the first ship to lay a permanent transatlantic telegraph cable. The 'Great Eastern' is pictured here behind other smaller vesels.
