Transporting coal from the North-East collieries by ship. One of ten etchings published by William Fordyce in 'Coal and Iron' (1860), after original plates from T H Hair's 'A Series of Views of Collieries in the Counties of Northumberland and Durham' (1844). Dimensions: 7 X 40.5 cm. Before about 1860 coal was transported in sailing colliers, from which it was uploaded manually into lighters.
