Description

Lithograph by Vincent Brooks, showing a horse-drawn tram operated by Greenwich Street Tramways which provided services between Pimlico, Peckham and Camberwell. Horse-drawn trams were first introduced in Britain by George Francis Train, an American entrepreneur, who opened lines in Birkenhead in 1860, and London in 1861. Train's venture proved unsuccesful and short-lived, but after Parliament pased the Tramways Act in 1870, tram services were started up in London and several other British cities. The trams continued to be pulled by horses until the first electric trams appeared in 1901.
