Photograph by H Wade. Onlookers gather around a car which has left the road during the hill climb organised by the Manchester Automobile Club on 5th October 1912. A rope or cable has been fixed to the rear of the car in readiness for trying to pull it back onto the road. Hill climbing events, where competitors take turns to try to set the fastest time over a set uphill route, have been popular since the early days of motorsport in Britain.
