Photograph by H Wade, showing a French-made Mathis driven by M E Mercer taking a sharp bend during the hill climb organised by the Manchester Automobile Club on 5th October 1912. Hill climbing events, where competitors take turns to try to set the fastest time over a set uphill route, have been popular since the early days of motorsport in Britain.
