Description

One of a series of lithographs by Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait (1819-1905) based on his own drawings, published by Bradshaw & Blacklock, Manchester, showing the viaduct crosing the River Mersey. Built in 1841-1842, this viaduct has 27 arches and remains the largest brick structure in Europe, spanning a third of a mile. Tait's depiction of the viaduct and surrounding area, vividly illustrates mid 19th century British industrialisation, in which the railways played a central role.
