Description

Hand-coloured etching by Henry Heath showing a runaway locomotive chasing a small group of people. The locomotive shown in this cartoon is the 'Northumbrian'; one of eight locomotives based on the 'Rocket' built by Robert Stephenson & Co for the Liverpool & Manchester Railway (LMR). Opened on 15 September 1830, the LMR was the world's first inter-city railway, linking Manchester, the centre of the textile industry, with Liverpool, the most important port in the north of England. Published by S Gans of Southampton Street, London.
