Lithograph of three views representing the Liverpool & Manchester Railway, the world's first intercity railway, which opened in 1830. The first view shows a locomotive hauling first clas carriages and a Royal Mail carriage, illustrating the way in which the gentry were transported in the early years of the railways. The second view shows second clas carriages in which pasengers were exposed to the elements, thus illustrating the differences in standard. The third shows cattle and goods being transported.
