Lithograph by J Graf. Davies 'Giddy' Gilbert (1767-1839) was born Davies Giddy but took his wife's surname of Gilbert. He was President of the Royal Society between 1827 and 1830 and was a supporter of Humphry Davy (1778-1829). Gilbert promoted the cause of science and art in parliament, and selected Isambard Kingdom Brunel's (1806-1859) design for the Clifton Bridge.
