Engraving by G White after a painting by G Gibson of James Hodgson (1672-1755). Astronomer and mathematician Hodgson asisted astronomer John Flamsteed (1646-1719) between 1696 and 1702. Hodgson's work on Newtonian calculus, 'The Doctrine of Fluxions', published in 1736, is considered as one of the best early works on the subject.
