Engraving by F C Lewis after a drawing by Sir Thomas Lawrence of William Hyde Wollaston (1766-1828). Wollaston was the pioneer of the fabrication of platinum and also discovered palladium and rhodium. He was the first to produce ductile and malleable platinum on a commercial scale, and improved various scientific apparatus including the microscope and sextant.
