Lithograph by J K Maguire of John Obadiah Westwood (1805-1893). Westwood wrote for many scientific journals and published several entomological textbooks. Among his palaeographical works are 'Paleographia Sacra Pictoria' (1845), 'Facsimiles of Miniatures and Ornaments of Anglo-Saxon and Irish Manuscripts' (1868), and 'Lapidarium Walliae' (1879). He was Secretary of the Entomological Society in 1834, and became the first Hope Profesor of Zoology at Oxford University in 1861, a position which he held until his death in 1893.
