Engraved frontispiece by T Dickinson after H Edridge of Mungo Park (1771-1806), from Park's 'Travels in the Interior Districts of Africa', published in London in 1799. Park was a surgeon with the East India Company, and was then employed by the African Asociation to explore the course of the Niger River in West Africa. He reached Bamako, (now the capital of Mali), in 1796, where he fell ill, but had succeeded in establishing that the river flowed eastwards. Park drowned while on a second expedition in Africa, aged 35.
