Coloured print by Thomas Rowlandson (1756-1827), produced by the English publisher Rudolph Ackermann (1764-1834) of the Strand, London. The aquatint is titled 'Syntax Star-gazing' shows Dr Syntax entertaining a lady with a view of the heavens through his telescope. The cartoon figures of the picture portray an episode in the third the Dr Syntax series called 'The Third Tour of Dr Syntax: in search of a wife'. Written by William Coombe the stories take the form of prolonged poems in which the life of mythical and caricature figure of Dr Syntax is told.
