Description
Lithograph by F M Jones showing the seafront at the holiday resort of Southport and the town's pier, which opened on 2 August 1860. The pier at Southport is regarded as the first of Britain's pleasure piers, which became popular at seaside resorts in Victorian times. Designed by James Brunlees, it was also significant for being the first pier to be built from iron. The opening of the 3600 foot long structure was a grand occasion, with procesions, a banquet and fireworks amongst the attractions.
