Description

Albumen photograph by Lawton & Scowen, one of a series depicting the construction of various railway bridges in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) between 1878 and 1883. This view shows 80-foot girders being swung acros a ravine beneath the Gingran Oya Viaduct on the Nanu Oya Extension Railway, a line through a mountainous region of the island's interior completed in 1885. The British began the building of Ceylon's railway system in 1864, with the two main cities, Colombo and Kandy, connected in 1867.
