Description

A poster advertising the varied attractions of the 'Klondyke Nugget', a wild west show whose themes included the American Gold Rush and the exploits of Samuel Franklin Cody (1867-1913) who starred in the productions. The original show was held at Alexandra Palace in the summer of 1898 and gradually evolved into a full-scale, popular melodrama featuring trick shooting, knife battles, galloping horses, exploding bridges and an Indian war party. It became one of the most popular and lucrative touring productions of its era. Cody later turned to aeronautics, inventing the 'war kite'. In a test flight in 1901 Cody rose 300 feet into the sky claiming, 'the highest ascent known to man without the aid of gas' before crashing to the ground.
