Engraving by 'ION' published by John Haywood, 1883. A satirical look at the state of the Church of England which is depicted as pulled apart by reformers, such as the 'Liberation Society' and new religious movements such as the Quakers, on one hand and by those who wish to 'Romanise' it on the other. The church is also shown under attack from the Americans and from the scientific discoveries of the day: Darwin, Huxley and Tyndall among others are lampooned. The bell is 'Great Paul', from St Paul's Cathedral. The artist explains his work in the text below.
