Description

Engraving by N Guerard showing a native Chilean in his dinghy made of inflated Harp seal skin. Also shown are: the hole through which the floats are inflated (E); method of sewing the skin (F); Harp seal on land (G); a penguin (H). Illustration from 'A Voyage to the South-sea, and along the coasts of Chili and Peru, in the years 1712, 1713, and 1714. Particularly describing the genius and constitution of the inhabitants, as well Indians as Spaniards' by French engineer Amedee Francois Frezier, (1682-1773), published in London in 1717.
