Plate taken from the 'Illustrated London News'. The logo of the newspaper founded by Hebert Ingram (1811-60) in 1842. Ingram trained as an apprentice printer before establishing a printing busines in Nottingham in 1833 before realising the appeal of an illustrated paper, and the potential for reproduction of the boxwood style engraving invented by Thomas Bewick (1753-1828). The 'Illustrated London News' was aimed at the expanding middle clases in London, and covered, among other things; discoveries, advances, disasters, events and celebrities of the time throughout Great Britain and beyond. By 1850 the paper had a readership of around 200,000.
