Plate from the 'Illustrated London News'. Paediatric hospitals in the country begun with the well-known Hospital For Sick Children at Great Ormond Street. Founded in 1851 by Sir Charles West, the hospital has gradually expanded on its present site, though the original building of 1872, designed by E M Barry, has been demolished. The East London Hospital for Children and Dispensary for Women, later the Princes Elizabeth of York Hospital for Children, was founded in 1868 and continued until1963. Here the children seem happy, though somewhat crowded.
