Plate taken from the 'Illustrated London News'. Lord Joseph Lister (1827-1912) was responsible for the introduction of antiseptic into surgical use and for aseptic surgery. Believing that airborne germs were responsible for the infection of wounds, he researched ways of destroying such organisms, originally based on the use of carbolic acid.
