Plate taken from the 'Illustrated London News'. The tricycle has its third wheel behind the two larger, and is being steered using the two handles extending upwards from the frame. Tricycling was very popular with adults as well as children in the 1870s and 80s, with a large variety of designs of tricycle being tried, including motor tricycles. By the 1890s tricycles had begun to be overtaken by the new safety bicycles, first introduced in 1885.
