Illustration from the 'Illustrated London News'. The Prince of Wales, later Edward VII (1841-1910) visits Ind Coope and Allsop's Brewery in Burton on Trent, Staffordshire. The company started in 1740 and grew rapidly during the next one hundred years. By the 1830s the two companies controlled almost two-thirds of the Indian export trade. The growth of tied trade and new, faster methods of production damaged the company, which began its decline in the 1880s.
