Plate taken from Illustrated London News (Vol 73/2 p 133). Sir Henry Cole (1808-1882) founded Summerley's Art Manufactures and The Journal of Design and Manufactures to encourage artists to design for industry. Cole was involved in the arrangements for the Great Exhibition of 1851, displaying 'art applied to industry' through exhibits from around the world. The succes of the Exhibition encouraged better design schooling and in 1852 the Board of Trade set up a department of practical art with Cole as joint secretary, in this capacity he formed the nucleus of the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum. In 1858 he became sole secretary, until 1873, when this portrait was published.
