Engraved plate from 'Voyage autour du monde' ('Voyage round the world') by Louis Isidore Duperrey (1826). Apart from the loom, (bottom centre), the items illustrated include a warping frame, a warp drum, a knife for cutting the weft thread, sticks for separating the warp threads, shuttles, a sample of dyed cloth, and a comparison of the knots made by European and Ualan weavers. Oualan (or Ualan) in the Caroline Islands archipelago is now part of the Federated States of Micronesia. Duperrey (1786-1865), a French marine hydrographer, was the commander of the 'Coquille' during its voyage (1822-1825) to Chile, Peru, Polynesia, the Molucca Islands (Indonesia), New Ireland (Papua New Guinea) and Australia.
