Engraved plate 52 from 'Voyage autour du monde' ('Voyage round the world') by Louis Isidore Duperrey (1826), showing two tattooed women from the island of Oualan (or Ualan). One is carrying liquid in a leaf. The Caroline Islands archipelago is now part of the Federated States of Micronesia.
