Description

Engraved plate 52 from 'Voyage autour du monde' ('Voyage round the world') by Louis Isidore Duperrey (1826), showing two tattooed women from the island of Oualan (or Ualan). One is carrying liquid in a leaf. The Caroline Islands archipelago is now part of the Federated States of Micronesia. Duperrey (1786-1865), a French marine hydrographer, was the commander of the 'Coquille' during its voyage (1822-1825) to Chile, Peru, Polynesia, the Molucca Islands (Indonesia), New Ireland (Papua New Guinea) and Australia.
